OPEN WATER DIVER HUNT

HUNT WAS FUN AND SUCCESSFUL

If it’s one thing I always try and do when hunting or fishing is to have fun. It doesn’t really matter to me if I am successful. Having fun in the outdoors is paramount.  This particular trip, my buddy Clint (seated) asked if I would like to attend a hunt up in the Quanicassee area. Since the deer hunting has been slow, I figured; “why not?”

Once I arrived at duck camp that Friday evening, I was greeted by guides  Jeff and Jason, and the fun was about to begin. Offering up a bunk and food, I gladly accepted.  A meal of burgers on the grill and Jason’s duck chili, I figured more than one beer would have been a bad idea.

The next morning we met up with friend Al Stewart and new friends Wayne and Hank. All of us looking like we were ready for the second week of deer camp in the UP we headed out for the bay. Jeff, Jason and Wayne went out and set the decoys and while Hank was set up in the layout boat.

As soon as shooting time came around, it was on! Ducks were everywhere. Taking turns in the layout boat, the guys convinced to give it  a try. If you have never experienced a layout boat during a hailstorm of ducks, I assure you, there’s nothing like it!

We headed back to camp for more burgers and the remains of the chili. Satisfied with a great new experience and new friends for sure, I can’t wait to do it again.

THANK YOU

I’ve tried to keep this short and to the point but please know this was a true learning experience for me. I have never been a waterfowler as some standards go, but I have a new found love for the art of this type of hunting and a deep appreciation for the guys that took the time to show me their passion for hunting waterfowl on the big open waters of Michigan.

Thanks to Clint for inviting me. To Jeff for his services, equipment and knowledge of this type of hunting. Jason for running the tender and making the awesome chili. Wayne and Hank for the great conversation. Al for his knowledge of the species and “talking shop” about deer hunting. Deke for retrieving the ducks which later wiped him out (see pic). And to all of the above for your [in some cases new] friendship. You have educated me and taught me a new way to hunt. And pushed me to hunt from a layout boat when in reality, I thought about sitting that one out. THANK YOU ALL!                                            I will be sure to pass it on…

We will also be following up on the NRC’s vote to completely ban baiting in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

We will also check in with the guys from Walleye 101 (www.walleye101.com). And Tracy Breen, (www.tracybreen.com) outdoor writer and and outdoorsman that faces a daily challenge that many of us will never encounter. Find out more this weekend on AM Outdoors.

MARTIN ARCHERY’S NEW WARTHOG PRO

I’M IN LOVE WITH A WARTHOG

and I don’t even know her name. Well, it may not really be a she, but if looks were enough to fall in love, then the 2009 Martin Warthog has got me smitten.

While most companies are adding extra wheels and braces, Martin has kept it simple. The new Warthog has a 6.25″ brace height that may make it a bit difficult to shoot, but it seems that what most people are looking for is speed. At 350 FPS (70#, 30″, 350 gr.) that’s cruzin’! New string stops and CAT hybrid cam and an 80% let off give you the ability to hold this bow for as long as you need should you have to wait to shoot.

I have been shooting the Firecat with a similar cam system. At full draw I can hand this bow off without snapping back to the start position (figure of speech. I would never recommend it).

NEW CAMO

Martin Archery is even offering this bow in a sweet new Hunter Black, Midnight Blue (for indoor shooters) and also in NEXT camo. A sweet new camo that incorporates a real looking depth that seems to be reminiscent of both Real Tree and my personal favorite, Mossy Oak Treestand.

PRICE

Although I do not know the MSRP, I can only imagine that it shouldn’t be priced out of it’s league. The one thing that Martin has always accomplished is a top quality product with out the huge price. This a company that offers top quality equipment at “Joe six-pack” pricing (sorry Sarah, I stole that from you).

If this shoots as well as it looks, I’ll be looking for a new residence because my wife will never see me again! Then again I might need one in every color just to be safe!

FINAL THOUGHT

I will do a complete report on this once I get my grubby little mits on one. I will be brutally honest as well.  I don’t think I will be too disappointed. I have three Martin bows now and all have been wonderful. They are: 2007 Bengal, 2008 Firecat and a Dreamcatcher re-curve. I have shot the hell out of all of them and they’re every bit as good as when I first picked them up.

WIN A HUNTER SAFETY SYSTEM LIFE LINE

HUNTER SAFETY SYSTEM DRAWING

Big thanks to President of Hunter Safety System, John  Wydner for stopping by AM Outdoors a couple of weeks ago.

John and his group have, in my opinion the best safety harness on the market. I have looked at others and settled on this particular system for my own personal use. I know they are not the least expensive, but you have to ask yourself; “what value do you put on your own life and those who will be affected by your loss or serious injury?”

Personally, I can’t believe that I have waited this long to get one. I know money is tight and I have been blessed by close friends in the industry. At the same time, not everyone can have the best of everything especially in this economy.

Whether you make your own tree-stand or have the best of the best, your only as safe as your last step.

HUNTER SAFETY LIFE-LINE

Here is the fun part: All you have to do is copy and fill out this form and get it back to me at duran.martinez@citcomm.com and I will draw a winner on Friday October 17th. I will then pick a random winner and ship out the Hunter Safety System Life-Line off to you. It’s our way of saying “Thanks for Listening” and “Stay Safe.”

APOLOGIES FROM DURAN FOR 10/4/08

Posted in General Outdoors by Duran on the October 4th, 2008

FIRST, THE GOOD NEWS

We were honored to have Richard and Steve from Roscoby Riser Cams on todays show. Watching them was like watching proud parents with their new baby. They are very excited about their new riser cam that allows the bow hunter to film from shot to finish!(By the way fellas, I get credit for that one.)  I will have full reports to come.

Thanks also to Lance Valentine from Walleye 101. Lance moved his slot for Ted Nugent to come on the show. Well, maybe next time.

MY APOLOGIES

To all AM Outdoors listeners and friends. This weekends show was to feature Rocker and noted Outdoorsman, Ted Nugent. It was my understanding that Ted was in California and would call during the second hour of the show to talk about his new book, “Ted White and Blue: The Nugent Manifesto.”

Well, because we are live and Ted has always been very punctual, we did not have a back up. I am hoping that all is well with Ted and his family and that he can vist AM Outdoors again soon.

 HUGE THANKS

I do have to thank a couple of close friends for saving the show this weekend. I would first like to thank my good friend, Mike Aungst. Mike has been a great friend and has a great ear for when I’m “reaching” and am in need of content.

Mike, hearing me my despair, called his best friend Chef Forrest Waldo. Chef  Waldo hails from Grand Ledge, Michigan originally. He has been the executive chef  for then Governor James Blanchard. Executive Chef for Con Agra foods where he helped develop the Healthy Choice line that many have enjoyed over the years. He is currently the executive chef for  a company by the name of High Plains Bison. Much like Omaha Steaks, High Plains Bison offers packages of bison (buffalo) delivered to your door.

Thanks to this team of friends joining together to help a brother out, we gleaned some very helpful information about venison, and some great recipes for venison, walleye, salmon and small game.

You can find out more about Chef Waldo and High Plains Bison at www.highplainsbison.com.  For more info on the recipes from today’s show, go to www.michigantalknetwork.comfor podcasts of our shows.

Thanks to all of you! More guests and bigger shows to come.
