Scott’s Hunting Tips- How to pick a guide.

Finding an outfitter for your hunting trip

*First, pick a hunt that you are physically able to do

*Pick the game animal that you are truly interested in hunting

The Hunt for the Outfitter

* Word of Mouth is the best.  Fellow hunters that have already hunted with the outfitter.  Friends or friends of friends won’t hold back.  They will tell you the good and the bad.

*Outdoor shows.  A good place to meet the outfitter first hand and answer all your questions face to face.  Also give you a first hand look at his photos and get references.

*The Internet.  Here you can check out their web page and photos.  A lot of them have references on their web site.  If you are really interested in this outfitter, call him and get references that are not on the web page.

*Get a list of State or Providence Professional Guide/Outfitter Association listings on the Internet.

*Prior to talking to any outfitter, sit down and make a list of questions you want answered.

Questions to Ask

*TOTAL price

*Any costs not in the brochure, such as:

-Pick up & return to the airport

-Do we have to rent a car

-Other transportation cost once in camp

-Are accommodations part of the package

-Hotel room prior to or after hunt

   -License Fees, Archery Stamps

   -Average Tip for the guides

-Meat Processing, Game Caping,Container for Shipping Meat & Cape

*Hunting private or public land

*Wounded game - If animal is not found, do you still get to hunt or is your hunt over

*Fair chase hunt or is it a High fence hunt

*If you are on a archery hunt, ask if the outfitter and his guide are archery hunters themselves

*Ask for a “What to Bring” list from the outfitter

*If you don’t get the right answers from one outfitter, check out 2 or 3 other guides that guide for the trophy animal you are after.  Book with someone you feel comfortable with.

**Again, call as many references as you can.

What to ask the References

*Did the guide supply all services that were advertised

*What week did they hunt & would they hunt that week again

*Were they successful, if not, did they have a shot opportunity during their stay

*Ask if they have been on other hunts with outfitters that they would recommend

ALWAYS pack your manners and Good Luck Hunting

MARTIN ARCHERY’S NEW WARTHOG PRO

I’M IN LOVE WITH A WARTHOG

and I don’t even know her name. Well, it may not really be a she, but if looks were enough to fall in love, then the 2009 Martin Warthog has got me smitten.

While most companies are adding extra wheels and braces, Martin has kept it simple. The new Warthog has a 6.25″ brace height that may make it a bit difficult to shoot, but it seems that what most people are looking for is speed. At 350 FPS (70#, 30″, 350 gr.) that’s cruzin’! New string stops and CAT hybrid cam and an 80% let off give you the ability to hold this bow for as long as you need should you have to wait to shoot.

I have been shooting the Firecat with a similar cam system. At full draw I can hand this bow off without snapping back to the start position (figure of speech. I would never recommend it).

NEW CAMO

Martin Archery is even offering this bow in a sweet new Hunter Black, Midnight Blue (for indoor shooters) and also in NEXT camo. A sweet new camo that incorporates a real looking depth that seems to be reminiscent of both Real Tree and my personal favorite, Mossy Oak Treestand.

PRICE

Although I do not know the MSRP, I can only imagine that it shouldn’t be priced out of it’s league. The one thing that Martin has always accomplished is a top quality product with out the huge price. This a company that offers top quality equipment at “Joe six-pack” pricing (sorry Sarah, I stole that from you).

If this shoots as well as it looks, I’ll be looking for a new residence because my wife will never see me again! Then again I might need one in every color just to be safe!

FINAL THOUGHT

I will do a complete report on this once I get my grubby little mits on one. I will be brutally honest as well.  I don’t think I will be too disappointed. I have three Martin bows now and all have been wonderful. They are: 2007 Bengal, 2008 Firecat and a Dreamcatcher re-curve. I have shot the hell out of all of them and they’re every bit as good as when I first picked them up.

AM OUTDOORS WELCOMES GRIM REAPER

GRIM REAPER “RAZOR TIP”

AM OUTDOORS WELCOMES GRIM REAPER (BROADHEADS)

Since I was first introduced to Grim Reaper Broadheads by my good friend Tom Nelson, I have had a great respect for this mechanical broadhead.

Now keep in mind, what I use may not be right for you. I just give you the information on what I have used and how they work for me. As far as broadheads go, everyone has their favorite. From Muzzy, to G5, to Thunderhead. Everyone has what they like. And not everybody is sold on mechanical broadheads.

THE PITCH

Now the pitch. Ahem, I use Grim Reaper Broadheads because…they work for me. The type in question are the 100 gr. Razorcut. With a solid “Trocrazor” tip (Trocar:Fr. Three sided) (Razor: Really. I don’t think I have to explain this part) and three razor sharp blades that expand to 1 - 3/8″ inches.  I’ll save all of the technical stuff for their site at www.grimreaperbroadheads.com

WHY WE CARE

The reason for all of the hype is because of much badgering and pleading, Matt and the gang at Grim Reaper have conceded to letting me become a member of their media staff. A huge victory for AM Outdoors because we were going to shoot their broadheads either way. This is just easier to get the good word out. We work hard for every harvest and are proud of the work we do on the show. Were also proud that Grim Reaper Broadheads have seen us to be worthy of having their name attached to what we have worked very hard to accomplish. So thanks for making me a member of the Media Staff for Grim Reaper Broadheads.
